Is There Any Worry about Getting Gum Disease After Getting False Teeth?

A lot of people make the assumption that once they get false teeth, their worries of gum disease are over. Unfortunately, that is not the case.

Your gums still need you to come in and take care of them, no matter what teeth you use to chew up your food. You can even get gum disease if you have no teeth left. Gum disease is an ailment of the gums, and is independent of the teeth.

Caring for Your Gums with False Teeth

If you have dentures, then it is imperative that you go in and clean your gums whenever you take your false teeth out to be cleaned. You should brush your gums carefully, just as you did your original teeth. Make sure you get the inside and outside of each gum surface, plus the surface that your dentures sit on.

When done brushing, make sure to rinse your mouth out with a good antimicrobial mouthwash to make sure you got all of the debris out of your mouth, keeping your gums healthy.

If you have dental implants, you want to make sure that you brush at least two times per day, floss daily at least once, and use the same antimicrobial mouthwash you would with dentures. This helps to keep your gums strong and healthy while you still have the functionality of your mouth.

Don’t harm your gums simply by ignoring them for the sake of false teeth. Keep up with your oral hygiene routine even after false teeth have been placed into your mouth. The healthier you can keep your gums, the better off your mouth, and your entire body, will be able to remain. If you want help with keeping your gums healthy, contact your periodontist today.
