Water is Helpful in Gum Disease Treatment
Posted on 11/9/2020 by Dr. Dennison
Water is Helpful in Gum Disease TreatmentWater plays an important part in oral and general health. It is important to stay hydrated for more reasons than you think. Constantly drinking water throughout the day gives your mouth many benefits. Those suffering from gum disease will be advised by our oral professionals to increase their water intake, as it is an effective way to keep the bacteria in the mouth at a manageable level. Water is a natural cleaner and neutralizer.

The Benefits of Drinking Water

Water helps to clean the mouth after a meal. It can dislodge food, and get rid of any acidic substances that may be stuck in your mouth. Having water during or after a meal is good practice to maintain the healthiness of teeth. An even better practice is to rinse your mouth with water after a meal. This removes any food debris from the mouth and prevents any damaging substances from remaining and causing harm. Individuals with braces are asked to rinse their mouths after meals for the same reason, as damage can be caused by the food stuck in the braces.

Particularly for those who breathe through their mouths, or participate in high-intensity exercises that cause them to, drinking water keeps the mouth from drying out. Saliva acts as a barrier between the teeth and acidic substances as it neutralizes and dilutes acid. However, if you dry out your mouth, this protective barrier is eliminated. This is why drinking water can help lubricate and prevent acid levels from rising too high in the mouth. For those with gum disease, drinking water can help regulate your oral health and make the gum disease treatment more effective. Neglecting your oral health at home while receiving gum disease treatment will make it more difficult for your dental health to return to normal.
